The summer vacation that kids have been looking forward to is fast approaching. That means it’s time to start planning your summer trips! A short or long getaway to a lake is a great idea for a family trip. Which one should you choose, and why? We’ve got some tips for you!
A lake vacation – plenty of opportunities and benefits
A trip to the water is always a good idea—for both children and adults. There are several thousand lakes of various sizes scattered across Poland. This means we can take a trip to a body of water—whether a natural lake or an artificial reservoir—without having to plan a long journey.
A lakeside vacation opens up a world of possibilities. There’s something for everyone here. Above all, the water offers opportunities for active recreation, such as swimming or sailing. Even the youngest members of the group will enjoy simply splashing around at the shore under the watchful eye of mom or dad. During your vacation, it’s also worth indulging in activities like walks, short or long hikes and bike rides, and fun and games on the beach.
On the sandy or gravelly ground surrounding the water, we can also just relax, lie down on a lounge chair, or spread out a towel with our favorite book and a refreshing drink in hand.
Vacations by the water – popular destinations
Thousands of Polish lakes and reservoirs attract hundreds of tourists every year who want to relax in nature and soothe their weary nerves with the gentle sound of water. There are truly many options—from the more crowded spots to the less popular ones, perfect for those seeking peace and seclusion.
Masuria
When talking about lakeside vacations in our country, it would be hard not to mention Masuria, home to the most famous and largest natural bodies of water in Poland. The Land of a Thousand Lakes is a unique place not only in Poland but also worldwide. It is an incredibly picturesque and enchanting region, captivating visitors with hundreds of lakes of all sizes, as well as other attractions.
Here, you can choose from both popular tourist destinations, such as Mikołajki, Giżycko, and Ostróda, as well as smaller, lesser-known towns. Masuria is home to dozens of hidden, mysterious lakes, far from the main tourist routes. These are unique places in harmony with nature, quiet and peaceful. Among them are:
- Lake Klimunt, located near Krutynia, is surrounded by dense forest; it is secluded and perfect for peaceful relaxation. The lake is bordered by natural vegetation, including reeds, and its water is a stunning blue;
- Lake Majcz Mały, located between the villages of Lipowo and Kołowinek, is a stunningly wild place—ideal for anglers and kayakers, but also for those seeking a peaceful getaway with their families;
- Lake Probarskie, located right next to the villages of Probark, Nowy Probark, and Kosewo; surrounded by forests and meadows, it also holds fascinating stories, and its surroundings include, among other things, ancient Prussian settlements;
Lake Czorsztyńskie
It is a unique place that combines the sound of rushing water with mountain peaks. Lake Czorsztyńskie is located in the Pieniny Mountains. It is a body of water separating Czorsztyn and Niedzica, two historic and tourist towns well worth visiting. There are supervised swimming areas here, perfect for active recreation for young and old alike, as well as other attractions. You can rent a pedal boat, a kayak, or a small boat. Rafting trips down the Dunajec River are also organized in the area. It’s definitely worth visiting the now-famous castles in Czorsztyn and Niedzica as well.
Lake Solina and the Bieszczady Mountains
For those who appreciate peace, quiet, and being close to nature, Solina is the perfect choice for a vacation by the water. This man-made body of water is the largest artificial reservoir in Poland. It also features a dam—the largest of its kind in the country—and a hydroelectric power plant.
Lake Solina covers an area of 22 km² and stretches along a dozen or so towns and villages. One of the most popular attractions associated with it is the dam located in the town of Solina and the gondola lift, which was built as recently as 2022.
The towns and villages along the lake offer a wide range of lodging options. Visitors can enjoy both active and passive leisure activities by the water. There are rental shops for water sports equipment, including pedal boats and rowboats. You can also book a guided tour on a sightseeing boat.
The reservoir stretches along towns such as Solina, Polańczyk, Teleśnica, Zawóz, Wołkowyja, and Chrewt. Both right on the lake and a little further away, in nearby towns and villages, numerous attractions and the picturesque peaks of the Bieszczady Mountains await tourists. These include, among others, the highest peak in this mountain range, Tarnica, as well as Połonina Caryńska and Bukowe Berdo, along with the Bison Show Farm in Muczne, the Museum of Boyko Culture, and the Bieszczady Narrow-Gauge Railway.

How can you prepare for a family vacation at the lake?
When planning a family trip to the lake, it’s a good idea to take care of a few things in advance to ensure that everyone has a comfortable and safe vacation.
1. Choosing a child-friendly location
Check to see if the lake has a supervised swimming area, a gentle slope into the water, a playground, or child-friendly attractions (inflatable play structures, mini-golf, nature trails).
2. Suitable accommodation
Families with children most often choose vacation homes, guesthouses, or campgrounds with amenities (bathroom, kitchenette, fenced-in area).
3. Essentials to pack
Don't forget to:
- sunscreen,
- hats and caps,
- swimsuits and towels,
- a first-aid kit containing basic medications and bandages,
- inflatable toys and water toys,
- snacks, water bottles, and picnic blankets.
4. Contingency plan for inclement weather
Bring along some board games, books, or cards, or see if there are any interesting museums, amusement parks, or indoor attractions in the area.
5. Safety First
Always supervise children near water. Younger children should wear life jackets or arm floats. Avoid swimming after dark and in unfamiliar, unsupervised areas.
