When March and April roll around, we all eagerly look for the first signs of the coming spring. This fills us with hope and energy for beautiful, warm days. We can actively welcome the new season as a family, teaching our little ones which signs to look for earliest and which will come a bit later. It’s also a great idea to make this whole ritual even more fun with various games and activities for the kids!

Let's play a game of spotting the first signs of spring—what should we look for?

All it takes is a walk together—or even stepping out into the garden—to see just how many signs of spring are already all around us. It’s worth keeping your eyes peeled and, together with your children, looking out for the following in particular:

  • developing buds on shrubs and trees,
  • the first flowers,
  • insects coming to life,
  • birds.

The first blooming flowers and the beautiful singing of birds will create a special atmosphere for a spring walk, but they will also allow us to explore together—and even more deeply—the most important signs of the coming new season.

A walk in search of spring – how should you dress your child?

It’s no wonder that sayings about the capricious and changeable spring weather are still common in our culture. It’s very common for mornings in March or April to still be chilly, while around noon the sun warms up more intensely, tempting us to leave our jackets at home. In the evening, the temperature drops significantly again, often catching us off guard.

That’s exactly why it’s so important to dress children appropriately for a spring walk—and to keep in mind that the weather can change at any moment. It’s a good idea to bring a lightweight rain jacket in case of rain, as well as a warm hat, which will come in handy if there’s a stronger, still-chilly breeze. Let’s also make sure that under the jacket or sweatshirt, the child is wearing something lighter in case the temperature rises a few degrees. If we’re planning a longer walk, be sure to wear comfortable shoes. It’s a good idea to choose ones that can handle water or mud well.

The first signs of spring – ideas for outdoor games and activities

First and foremost, simply taking a walk in the park or the woods can be great fun for us and our kids, but it’s also a chance to spend time together. However, it’s worth spicing things up with various activities or games.

Spotting and identifying spring birds, flowers, and plants

Whenever we can combine fun with learning, it’s always worth doing so. This way, children not only have a great time, but also learn about the world around them. It’s also a good idea to take advantage of this opportunity during a walk in the park or the woods. All you have to do is listen carefully and look for signs of spring, and then try to figure them out.

If you’re not an expert on plants or birds, it’s a good idea to prepare for your walk. You can bring along a bird or plant guidebook, or print out pictures of flowers, shrubs, and trees that will be blooming in the coming weeks. Let’s also try to find recordings of individual birds’ songs online and compare them to the ones we hear in person.

Spring collages and art projects

Once we’ve enjoyed the first signs of spring during our walk, we can get ready for another activity—this time one we can do at home. While we’re still out walking, let’s try to collect as many signs of nature coming to life as possible. Remember, however, to respect nature—don’t break or pick any twigs or flowers. We can also use plants from our own garden or yard.

Let’s use the items we’ve collected to create any kind of pictures, collages, or landscapes. All you need is a large sheet of paper—or even a piece of cardboard—scissors, glue, and the treasures you’ve brought along. You can also decorate your collage with colorful paper or tissue paper.

We can glue the collected leaves or twigs onto cardboard or dip them in paint to make colorful prints. There are so many possibilities, and the final result depends entirely on our imagination!

Sensory Play: Spring Riddles

This is an activity we can organize at home, at preschool, in the backyard, or during a walk to the park or forest. All we need are some scarves—they’ll serve as blindfolds for the participants. The game involves guessing as many spring treasures as possible without looking. These can be parts of plants, such as buds, catkins, or twigs, but not limited to those. The little ones can also try to identify flowers by their scent.

If we can’t organize a guessing game using real plants, we can play a word game. All you need to do is prepare cards with symbols of spring, such as ladybugs, bees, flower buds, birdsong, and so on. Then, divide into teams and let the fun begin! You can display the clues on a piece of paper or a board, or you can show them, give hints, and guide the guessers using verbal clues.

Spring Physical Activities

Spring is the perfect time to encourage children to be physically active outdoors. Movement is good for your health, and it’s also great fun! It’s worth using the space in a park, garden, or meadow to organize simple physical activities. Classic games like tag, sack races, jumping rope, or tug-of-war work great. We can also set up mini sports competitions—for example, an obstacle course using natural elements like stones, sticks, or branches. Activities like these not only improve children’s fitness but also develop their coordination and teach them healthy competition.

Spring Workshops for Parents

Creating things together is a fantastic way to spend time and foster creativity. Spring workshops can include a variety of activities—from making eco-friendly Easter decorations, to building insect houses, to planting the first plants in the garden or on the balcony. Such activities develop children’s fine motor skills, teach patience, and foster a love for nature. By participating in the workshops, parents demonstrate the importance of engagement and cooperation, while children gain beautiful memories of shared activities.

Spring Sensory Activities

Spring offers many opportunities that can be incorporated into sensory play. It’s a good idea to organize activities that engage different senses: touch (exploring the textures of plants, soil, and grass), smell (recognizing the scents of flowers), sight (looking for colorful signs of spring), and hearing (listening to birdsong or the sound of the wind). A great idea is to create sensory paths made of natural materials—children can walk barefoot on different surfaces: grass, sand, stones, or soft moss. Such experiences support the development of sensory integration and bring children a lot of joy.
