When we hear the term "amusement park," the vast majority of us think of roller coasters. A roller coaster, which offers a thrilling ride and a rush of excitement, is one of the key attractions at any amusement park. What exactly does a ride need to have to be called a roller coaster, and where can you find the largest attraction of this type in Poland?

Roller Coaster – Definition and History

Roller coasters are rides consisting of narrow tracks and interconnected cars. A special mechanism pulls them up to the first, highest peak of the ride. This is where the adventure begins. After reaching the highest point, a rapid descent follows, accompanied by a transfer of energy. The cars are no longer propelled solely by mechanical force but also move due to the force of gravity. This natural force is used to achieve high speeds for the cars.

Numerous loops and turns are also essential features of a mountain roller coaster, adding to the excitement of the ride. Gaining speed, gliding freely, and navigating various loops and curves cause dynamic shifts in the position of the cars as well as the passengers themselves. This, in turn, allows them to experience the characteristic sensation of being pressed into their seats or a unique feeling of weightlessness.

Modern roller coasters are equipped with special braking and safety systems that ensure the highest level of safety during the ride.

The first rides to resemble modern roller coasters in both design and operation are considered to be two attractions built in France in 1817, featuring cars moving along tracks. The world’s first officially recognized roller coaster, however, was an attraction designed in 1883 and built in Toledo, Ohio. It was the world’s first roller coaster, constructed as a circular track over 6 meters high. That same year, two similar structures were built in the United States, which quickly gained popularity.

The first roller coasters in Poland

The first roller coaster in our country opened in 1929. This attraction was part of a major event—the General National Exhibition in Poznań—organized to mark the 10th anniversary of Poland’s regaining of independence. However, this ride was not a permanent structure, but merely a temporary attraction. We had to wait several more decades for such roller coasters, as the first permanent roller coasters, which were part of amusement parks, did not appear in our country until the 1990s.

In fact, it’s only in the last dozen or so years that we’ve been able to enjoy and ride some truly exceptional roller coasters in Poland. These include the Lech Coaster, the pride of Legendia Park, and the Hyperion, known for its size and speed.

The largest roller coaster in Poland

In our country, the Hyperion roller coaster is number one in terms of both size and speed. This massive roller coaster is one of the most popular attractions at Energylandia amusement park, located in Zator, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

Hyperion is located in the park’s extreme zone, where only thrill-seekers venture. The ride impresses with its design, particularly the nearly 80-meter-high ascent from which the ride begins. The slow climb to 77 meters above the ground builds suspense. Then the cars stop briefly before the launch, so that riders can look down for a moment at the track awaiting them. After launch, the cars hurtle downward at an impressive speed, maintaining an 85-degree angle of incline. Thanks to a special underground tunnel, the ride descends not just 77, but a full 82 meters. At its fastest point, the cars reach a speed of 142 kilometers per hour. Hyperion is not only the largest and fastest roller coaster in Poland, but also the second-highest and fastest roller coaster in Europe. The entire track is nearly 1,500 meters long.

The theme of the entire ride is a space mission aboard the Hyperion. This theme is present not only on the roller coaster itself, but also in the queue line and the entrance area.

Roller coasters in Poland – not just Hyperion

Thrill-seekers and fans of high-speed rides shouldn’t limit themselves to the amusement park in Małopolska that features the Hyperion. After all, there are at least a dozen different roller coasters across the country! A perfect example of this is the Wiking Coaster, located at the Rabkoland amusement park in Rabka. It is a unique roller coaster with a Viking theme, a wonderful attraction for families with children.

The Viking Coaster is great fun for both little ones and slightly older visitors to Rabkoland. It’s the perfect choice as a first roller coaster for less experienced thrill-seekers!
