Beskid Wyspowy – Basic Information
This region is the picturesque Western Beskids mountain range, located on the border between the Lesser Poland and Subcarpathian regions. What sets this area apart above all else is its unique topography. The Beskids are dotted with numerous isolated mountain peaks, which are referred to as “islands” due to their isolated locations.
To the west, this area borders the Makowski Beskids, and to the east, the Sądecka Basin. To the south and north, it is surrounded by the Gorce Mountains, the Rabcza Basin, and the Wiśnickie Foothills, respectively. Its total area is a whopping 1,000 square kilometers!
The Beskid Wyspowy region is home to many attractive hiking trails, peaks of varying sizes, and charming towns and villages. The highest peak in this area is Mogielica, at 1,170 meters above sea level. The largest towns and tourist centers in the region include Mszana Dolna, Limanowa, Kasina Wielka, and Tymbark.

The entire Beskid region is full of numerous interesting places—from hiking trails and museums to beautiful towns. To explore and appreciate them all, you’d need to plan at least a few trips to this unique region.
Lake Rożnów
This is undoubtedly one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations, offering a wealth of attractions. The picturesque lakefront is particularly striking, but the many opportunities this place offers visitors by no means end there. Visitors to the area can relax in the water or on the shore, but they can also explore:
- the village of Młyńska in Roztoka-Brzeziny,
- historic churches,
- castles and fortresses,
- manor houses and palaces,
- numerous viewpoints.
Mogielica
All lovers of mountain hikes should make it a must-visit on their itinerary: Mogielica, the highest peak of the Beskid Wyspowy range. Several scenic trails lead to the summit, which rises to an elevation of 1,170 meters above sea level. It is easy to find and choose one that suits the expectations and abilities of all participants in the trip.
Since 2022, there has been a 20-meter-tall observation tower at the summit of Mogielica, offering magnificent panoramic views of the Gorce, the Beskids, and even the Tatra Mountains.
The Bandits' Table
It’s an unassuming but fascinating spot on the map of the Beskid Wyspowy. Zbójnicki Stół is a distinctive rock outcrop located on the northern slope of Mogielica. It lies between the Wyśnikowa clearing and the summit, so you can see it when hiking to the region’s highest peak.
There is also a local legend associated with this impressively large sandstone rock. It is said that, thanks to its flat shape—which resembles a table—it became the perfect spot for bandits, who would count and divide their loot there. There are also various stories circulating that the bandits’ loot, divided on the table, still lies buried in nearby caves and clearings.
Waterfalls
The Beskid Wyspowy Mountains and their hiking trails also feature several magnificent waterfalls that captivate visitors with their majestic beauty and soothing murmur. While hiking toward Ćwilin, it’s worth seeking out the nearby waterfall on Mocurowy Potok. Little-known and difficult to reach, it is located near the Gruszowiec Pass.
It’s also worth visiting the waterfalls in the Lubomir Range in Pcim. There are two waterfalls in the area—Na Wielkiej Skale and on the Wielka Suszanka Stream.
Wiśnicz Castle
The Beskid Wyspowy region is home not only to picturesque trails and peaks, but also to historic, imposing fortresses and palaces. One of these is Wiśnicz Castle, built on a beautiful wooded hill overlooking the Leksandrówka River. This early Baroque structure impresses with its tall towers and magnificent inner courtyard.
There are many interesting attractions to enjoy on the castle grounds. Visitors can explore the castle chambers and the frescoed chapel, as well as the dungeons, which feature an original exhibition on torture. You can also take a virtual tour, using VR (virtual reality) to transport yourself to the castle’s 17th-century setting.
Luboń Wielki
Luboń Wielki is a peak famous not only for its beauty and the views stretching out from its summit, but also for its unique mountain hut. This charming place stands out for its small size, as it is the smallest in the Beskids. One of the most interesting features of the building is a room with panoramic windows facing all four directions.
Stone Observation Tower
The structure at the summit of Kamionna is the newest tourist attraction in the Beskid Wyspowy Mountains. Erected in 2023, the tower stands 29 meters tall. To reach the very top and the observation deck, you have to climb 121 steps. However, the fact that you can reach the hilltop of Kamionna via an exceptionally short trail in just a few minutes may serve as some compensation.

Beskid Wyspowy – Popular Towns
The Beskid Wyspowy region is rich in picturesque towns that attract tourists not only with their beautiful landscapes, but also with their local culture and hospitality. Among the most famous places is Limanowa, the heart of the region, with its distinctive Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows and numerous viewpoints. Mszana Dolna is an excellent starting point for mountain trails, while Kasina Wielka is famous for the Kasina Ski resort and its historic train station, known from films. It is also worth visiting Tymbark, known not only for its juice production plant but also for its beautiful walking and cycling trails.
Beskid Wyspowy – mountain huts
Although the Beskid Wyspowy isn’t as densely dotted with mountain huts as the Tatra Mountains, you’ll find several incredibly charming spots here that offer a place to rest after a day of hiking. The most famous is the Luboń Wielki Mountain Hut, known for its cozy interior and small size—considered one of the smallest in the Polish mountains. It is also worth mentioning the shepherd’s huts and private tourist shelters, which delight with their tranquility, regional decor, and the scent of burning wood.
Beskid Wyspowy – Popular Trails
The Beskid Wyspowy Mountains offer hundreds of kilometers of trails of varying difficulty, ideal for both families with children and avid hikers. The most popular routes include the trail to Mogielica (the green trail from Jurków or the blue trail from Rzek), the trail to Ćwilin from the Gruszowiec Pass, and the route to Luboń Wielki from Rabka-Zdrój. It is also worth trying a section of the Beskid Wyspowy Trail – Beskid Islands, which connects the region’s most important peaks and allows you to discover its characteristic “island-like” terrain.
Beskid Wyspowy – what's the weather like?
The weather in the Beskid Wyspowy can be unpredictable—it’s a region with a varied microclimate. Summers here are warm but not sweltering, with temperatures ranging from 22–25°C, while winters are often snowy, making them ideal for activities like skiing and winter hiking. In spring and fall, fog often hangs in the valleys, adding a unique charm to the landscapes. The best time for hiking is from May to October, when the trails are most accessible and the weather is ideal for long walks in the mountains.
Beskid Wyspowy – Where to Stay?
Accommodation options in the Beskid Wyspowy range are very diverse—from farm stays and guesthouses to cozy mountain cabins and apartments in small towns. In Limanowa and Mszana Dolna, you’ll find hotels of a good standard, while in smaller towns like Słopnice, Kasina Wielka, or Łukowica — charming agritourism farms serving regional cuisine. For those seeking contact with nature, cottages with mountain views, often equipped with a fireplace or an outdoor tub, are an excellent option.
Beskid Wyspowy – the highest peaks
The highest peak in the Beskid Wyspowy range is the aforementioned Mogielica (1,170 m a.s.l.), which offers breathtaking views and numerous hiking trails. Next on the list are Ćwilin (1,072 m a.s.l.), Jasień (1,062 m a.s.l.), Luboń Wielki (1,022 m a.s.l.) and Kostrza (720 m a.s.l.). Each of these peaks has its own unique character—Mogielica delights with its panorama of the Tatra Mountains, Luboń Wielki with its mountain hut and legends, and Ćwilin with a wide summit clearing perfect for resting.
Beskid Wyspowy – observation towers
Observation towers are one of the newest and most popular attractions in the Beskid Wyspowy. In addition to the well-known tower on Mogielica, it is also worth visiting the tower on Szpilówka in Iwkowa, which offers an impressive view of the Beskid Sądecki and the Wiśnickie Foothills. In 2023, a modern tower on Kamionna was also built, standing 29 meters tall—on a clear day, you can even see the Tatra Mountains from its summit. More and more such structures are being built in the region as part of the “Beskid Wyspowy Observation Towers” project, making this area even more attractive to lovers of mountain panoramas.
