The summer vacation season is slowly approaching, so many of us are planning family trips, both within the country and abroad. It’s especially important to be well-prepared for the latter, particularly if young children are joining the trip. How can you properly plan your first overseas vacation with a child? What should you keep in mind? Here are some tips!
The right age for the first vacation abroad
It might seem that traveling abroad with a child is only for kids who are 7, 6, or 5 years old. Fortunately, today’s options and the highly developed tourism industry make it possible to take even a toddler just a few months old on such a vacation. Of course, everything depends on the parents’ and their children’s capabilities, as well as the chosen destination. It is generally accepted that even 4- or 5-month-old babies can fly.
Of course, before deciding to fly with such a young child, we should not only prepare properly but also carefully choose an airline that can provide the best possible care for the child throughout the flight. The same applies when choosing the destination for our trip.
Your first vacation abroad with a child – where to start?
Whether our little traveler is 5 months, 2, or 4 years old, they will require special attention and impeccable care—not only from their parents, but also from the airlines we’ve already mentioned and the staff at the hotel where we plan to stay.
Safety and comfort
For your first vacation abroad with a child, it’s best to choose a destination that can offer the highest level of safety and comfort. The warm countries of Southern Europe are a good option, as they boast a well-developed tourism infrastructure, including facilities tailored to families traveling with children.
A safe distance
For your little one’s first vacation destination, it’s a good idea to choose a place that’s relatively close by. If you’re planning to fly, you might consider countries like Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, or Portugal, which are all less than 3–4 hours away by plane.
If, on the other hand, we’re going on vacation by car, we should choose the countries closest to us, which we can also reach in a similar amount of time. For people living in the south of the country, these would be Slovakia, the Czech Republic, or Hungary; for residents of the north—Lithuania; and for those living in the western provinces—Germany. We can also opt for the nearest countries in Northern Europe, namely Denmark or Sweden. In this case, an interesting option is to combine travel by car with a ferry or boat.
If you’re planning a long car trip, it’s a good idea to break the journey into several segments to make it as comfortable and convenient as possible for both the child and the parents. You can plan a few shorter or longer stops along the way to your final destination. For example, when driving to Croatia, you can stop in Košice, Slovakia, and then in Budapest, thereby dividing the route into approximately 3-hour segments.
Hotel amenities
When choosing a travel destination, let’s check what amenities our hotel or rental apartment offers. It’s a good idea to select all the options necessary for families with small children—such as a crib or changing table in the room—right from the start of your search. It’s also wise to review the property’s policies. Some hotels do not accept guests with children under the age of 10 or 12.
Traveling abroad with a toddler – what should you pack?
When traveling abroad with a young child, it’s very important to choose the right place to stay. You should also pack all the essentials that will ensure your comfort, safety, and a pleasant vacation. When planning a vacation with a toddler, keep the following in mind:
- appropriate clothing suited to the weather conditions in that location;
- favorite toys and accessories to keep your little one entertained during the trip;
- hygiene products, wet wipes, diapers, changing pads, and moisturizing creams;
- A first-aid kit should include basic pain relievers, bandages, and sunscreen.
In addition, we should bring enough drinks and food for the trip itself. Snacks should be able to withstand temperature fluctuations and be easy to eat.
Documents
It is very important to prepare and bring the necessary documents with you when traveling. Above all, you must have a passport or ID card that allows you to cross the border. It is worth remembering that these regulations apply even when traveling to countries within the Schengen Area. Before leaving, you should also purchase travel insurance that covers basic medical care.
When traveling to European Union countries, it’s a good idea to carry a special EHIC card, or European Health Insurance Card. It entitles you to free basic medical care. The card is also valid in EFTA countries, namely Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
Where should we go for our first vacation abroad with our child?
For your first vacation with a toddler, it’s best to choose nearby, family-friendly destinations. Spain, Greece, Italy, and Bulgaria are popular destinations that offer not only beautiful beaches but also a well-developed tourist infrastructure for families with children. If you’re looking for a shorter trip, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, or Croatia could be excellent options. It’s worth following this rule: the shorter and simpler the travel, the more comfortable it is for the child.
Family vacations abroad – with or without a travel agency?
When planning your first overseas vacation with a child, it’s worth considering both options. A travel agency offers organizational convenience—it arranges flights, transfers, hotels, and often activities for children. This is a good solution for parents who want to minimize the stress of planning. Organizing the trip on your own offers more freedom and the ability to tailor the trip to your child’s needs, but it requires more time and preparation. The final choice depends on the parents’ experience and preferred travel style.
Vacationing with a toddler – make sure they’re up to date on their vaccinations
When planning a trip abroad with a child, you should make sure that the vaccination schedule has been completed as recommended by your pediatrician. For some destinations, especially outside of Europe, additional vaccinations may be required. Before traveling, it’s a good idea to consult your family doctor or visit a travel medicine clinic to check whether there are any health risks at your vacation destination, such as tropical diseases.
Traveling Abroad with Children and the Language Barrier
For many parents, the language barrier can be a problem when vacationing with a child. It’s therefore a good idea to choose destinations where popular resorts cater to tourists in English or Polish. In large hotels, especially in Greece, Turkey, or Spain, you can count on Polish-speaking activity leaders. It’s also a good idea to download a translation app on your phone—this will make it easier to communicate in emergencies, such as at a pharmacy or doctor’s office.
How do I choose insurance for my first vacation abroad?
The right insurance is essential for a safe vacation with a toddler. The policy should cover the costs of medical treatment, hospitalization, medical transport, and repatriation if necessary. It’s also worth checking whether the policy includes coverage for luggage and children’s equipment (such as a stroller). Families planning an active vacation—such as hiking in the mountains—should purchase a policy that covers recreational sports. This ensures that, in the event of unforeseen incidents, the entire family will receive professional assistance.
Responsibility, awareness, and a positive attitude
When planning a vacation abroad with a child, remember to pack a well-stocked first-aid kit, appropriate clothing, and sunscreen, but also to use common sense and act responsibly. Choose a destination and itinerary that suit your child’s age as well as your own capabilities.
Let’s also keep in mind the simple, small, yet important differences between Poland and the country we plan to visit. Let’s check the local currency and its exchange rate, as well as the shape and voltage of electrical outlets. Let’s also be mindful of differences resulting from different time zones or climates.
Let’s choose destinations that are interesting, but above all, safe. That way, we can be sure that our planned vacation will be a complete success and an unforgettable experience!
